Target’s Seasonal Military Discounts

If you don't have a Sam's Club membership yet, you can get a standard membership for $20, a 60% discount off its usual price of $50. Or, you can save $50 on a Sam's Club Plus membership – usually $110.

Through Groupon, you can get it for $60. Once per month, Walgreens offers Seniors Day, which provides 20 percent off to people ages 55 and up. The Seniors Day discount can be redeemed on the first Tuesday of each month.

To qualify, you may need to show the cashier proof of age or proper identification. Just make sure you create a myWalgreens account before you redeem the discount. From Friday, Nov. 11 through Monday, Nov. 14, Walgreens will honor those who serve the country by offering 20% ​​off regular price eligible store items, Walgreens spokesperson Meredith Beyer wrote in an email to The Military Wallet reporter Teresa Tennyson.

Us Military Twitter

Us Military Twitter - The Internet Archive does not preserve the full history of every account, but The Intercept identified several accounts that initially listed themselves as U.S. government accounts in their bios, but, after being whitelisted, shed any disclosure that they were affiliated with the military and posed as ordinary users.

Other accounts on the list were focused on promoting U.S.-supported militias in Syria and anti-Iran messages in Iraq. One account discussed legal issues in Kuwait. Although many accounts remained focused on one topic area, others moved from topic to topic.

For instance, @dala2el, one of the CENTCOM accounts, shifted from messaging around drone strikes in Yemen in 2017 to Syrian government-focused communications this year. "As another example, when anti-government messages are spread in social media, the government would want to spread counter messages to balance that effort and hence identify people who are more likely to spread such counter messages based on their opinions."

"Generally what happens, at the time when I was there, CENTCOM will develop a list of messaging points that they want us to focus on," said the contractor. "Basically, they would, we want you to focus on say, counterterrorism and a general framework that we want to talk about."

From there, he said, supervisors would help craft content that was distributed through a network of CENTCOM-controlled websites and social media accounts. As the contractors created content to support narratives from military command, they were instructed to tag each content item with a specific military objective.

Generally, the contractor said, the news items he created were technically factual but always crafted in a way that closely reflected the Pentagon's goals. One of the accounts that Kahler asked to have whitelisted, @mktashif, was identified by the researchers as appearing to use a deep-fake photo to obscure its real identity.

Initially, according to the Wayback Machine, @mktashif did disclose that it was a U.S. government account affiliated with CENTCOM, but at some point, this disclosure was deleted and the account's photo was changed to the one Stanford identified as a deep fake.

In the paper, which included data gathered through actively engaging 3,761 people on Twitter around the topics of public safety and bird flu, the researchers added: "Unlike existing work, which often uses only social network properties, our feature set includes personality traits that may

influence one's retweeting behaviour.” What was discussed at the classified meetings — which ultimately did take place, according to the Post — was not included in the Twitter emails provided to The Intercept, but many of the fake accounts remained active for at least another year.

Some of the accounts on the CENTCOM list remain active even now — like this one, which includes affiliation with CENTCOM, and this one, which does not — while many were swept off the platform in a mass suspension on May 16.

Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of the North Korean leader, last month in a speech to the ruling party, threatened retaliation against joint drills by saying "there is no change in our will to make the worst maniacs escalating the tensions pay the price for

their action.” Twitter did not provide unfettered access to company information; rather, for three days last week, they allowed me to make requests without restriction that were then fulfilled on my behalf by an attorney, meaning that the search results may not have been exhaustive.

I did not agree to any conditions governing the use of the documents, and I made efforts to authenticate and contextualize the documents through further reporting. The redactions in the embedded documents in this story were done by The Intercept to protect privacy, not Twitter.

The Guardian approached a number of individuals involved in research, asking them for their views on why they believed the US military may be interested in funding research of this type, and asking about the extent to which consent was sought from people whose social media posts were

recorded and analyzed. One engineer, who asked not to be named because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said that he had never seen this type of tag before, but upon close inspection, said that the effect of the "whitelist" tag essentially gave the

accounts the privileges of Twitter verification without a visible blue check. Twitter verification would have bestowed a number of advantages, such as invulnerability to algorithmic bots that flag accounts for spam or abuse, as well as other strikes that lead to decreased visibility or suspension.

The Intercept spoke to a former employee of a contractor — on the condition of anonymity for legal protection — engaged in these online propaganda networks for the Trans-Regional Web Initiative. He described a loose newsroom-style operation, employing former journalists, operating out of a generic suburban office building.

Military online propaganda efforts have largely been governed by a 2006 memorandum. The memo notes that the Defense Department's internet activities should "openly acknowledge U.S. involvement" except in cases when a "Combatant Commander believes that it will not be possible due to operational considerations."

This method of nondisclosure, the memo states, is only authorized for operations in the "Global War on Terrorism, or when specified in other Secretary of Defense execute orders." The two allies will hold their "Freedom Shield" exercise from March 13-23, which will bolster a "joint defense posture in the face of North Korea's nuclear and missile threat," the militaries from the US and South Korea said Friday in a statement

. Stacia Cardille, then an attorney with Twitter, noted in an email to her colleagues that the Pentagon may want to retroactively classify its social media activities "to obfuscate their activity in this space, and that this may represent an overclassification to avoid embarrassment."

The accounts in question started out openly affiliated with the U.S. government. But then the Pentagon appeared to shift tactics and began concealing its affiliation with some of these accounts — a move toward the type of intentional platform manipulation that Twitter has publicly opposed.

Although Twitter executives maintained awareness of the accounts, they did not shut them down, but let them remain active for years. Some remain active. In the summer of 2020, officials from Facebook reportedly identified fake accounts attributed to CENTCOM's influence operation on its platform and warned the Pentagon that if Silicon Valley could easily out these accounts as inauthentic, so could foreign adversaries, according to a September report in the Washington

Post. Darpa, established in 1958, is responsible for technological research for the US military. Its notable successes have included no less than Arpanet, the precursor to today's internet, and numerous other innovations, including onion routing, which powers anonymising technologies like Tor.

However, thanks to some of its more esoteric projects, which have included thought-controlled robot arms, city-wide surveillance programs and exo-skeletons, the agency has also become the subject of many conspiracy theories, and a staple in programs like the X

- Filets. In 2018, for instance, Twitter announced the mass suspension of accounts tied to Russian government-linked propaganda efforts. Two years later, the company boasted of shutting down almost 1,000 accounts for association with the Thai military.

But rules on platform manipulation, it appears, have not been applied to American military efforts. Other studies looked further afield. One, "On the Study of Social Interactions on Twitter", which was carried out by the University of Southern California, collected tweets from 2,400 Twitter users who had identified themselves as residing in the Middle East.

It analyzed how often they had interactions with other users and how these were spread. In 2008, the U.S. Special Operations Command opened a request for a service to provide "web-based influence products and tools in support of strategic and long-term U.S.

Government goals and objectives." The contract referred to the Trans-Regional Web Initiative, an effort to create online news sites designed to win hearts and minds in the battle to counter Russian influence in Central Asia and global Islamic terrorism.

The contract was initially carried out by General Dynamics Information Technology, a subsidiary of the defense contractor General Dynamics, in connection with CENTCOM communication offices in the Washington, D.C., area and in Tampa, Florida. The researchers connected these accounts with a vast online ecosystem that included "fake news" websites, meme accounts on Telegram and Facebook, and online personalities that echoed Pentagon messages often without disclosure of affiliation with the U.S.

military. Some of the accounts accuse Iran of "threatening Iraq's water security and flooding the country with crystal meth," while others promoted allegations that Iran was harvesting the organs of Afghan refugees. "Social media is changing the way people inform themselves, share ideas, and organize themselves into interest groups, including some that aim to harm the United States," said a spokesperson.

"Darpa supports academic research that seeks to understand some of these dynamics through analyzes of publicly available discussions conducted on social media platforms." In 2019, lawmakers passed a measure known as Section 1631, a reference to a provision of the National Defense Authorization Act, further legally affirming clandestine psychological operations by the military in a bid to counter online disinformation campaigns by Russia, China, and other foreign adversaries

. On the same day that CENTCOM sent its request, members of Twitter's site integrity team went into an internal company system used for managing the reach of various users and applied a special exemption tag to the accounts, internal logs show.

Documents prepared by NSA and Britain's GCHQ (and previously published by the Intercept as well as NBC News) revealed aspects of some of these programs. They included a unit engaged in "discrediting" the agency's enemies with false information spread online.

The experiment, which resulted in a scientific paper published in the March issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, hid "a small percentage" of emotional words from people's news feeds, without their knowledge, to test what effect that had on the

statuses or "likes" that they then posted or reacted to. The project list includes a study of how activists with the Occupy movement used Twitter as well as a range of research on tracking internet memes and some about understanding how influence behavior (liking, following, retweeting) happens on a range of popular social media platforms like

Pinterest, Twitter, Kickstarter, Digg and Reddit. The revelations are buried in the archives of Twitter's emails and internal tools, to which The Intercept was granted access for a brief period last week alongside a handful of other writers and reporters.

Following Elon Musk's purchase of Twitter, the billionaire started giving access to company documents, saying in a Twitter Space that "the general idea is to surface anything bad Twitter has done in the past." The files, which included records generated under Musk's ownership, provide unprecedented, if incomplete, insight into decision-making within a major social media company.

"Combating attempts to interfere in conversations on Twitter remains a top priority for the company, and we continue to invest heavily in our detection, disruption, and transparency efforts related to state-backed information operations. Our goal is to remove bad-faith actors and to advance public understanding of these critical topics," said Pickles.

The emails obtained by The Intercept show that not only did Twitter whitelist these accounts in 2017 explicitly at the behest of the military, but also that high-level officials at the company discussed the accounts as potentially problematic in the following years.

In his email, Kahler sent a spreadsheet with 52 accounts. He asked for priority service for six of the accounts, including @yemencurrent, an account used to broadcast announcements about U.S. drone strikes in Yemen. Around the same time, @yemencurrent, which has since been deleted, had emphasized that U.S.

drone strikes were "accurate" and killed terrorists, not civilians, and promoted the U.S. and Saudi-backed assault on Houthi rebels in that country. Shortly before the publication of the Washington Post story in September, Katie Rosborough, then a communications specialist at Twitter, wrote to alert Twitter lawyers and lobbyists about the upcoming piece.

"It's a story that's mostly focused on DoD and Facebook; however, there will be a couple lines that reference us alongside Facebook in that we reached out to them [DoD] for a meeting. We don't think they'll tie it to anything Mudge-related or name any Twitter employees.

We declined to comment," she wrote. (Mudge is a reference to Peiter Zatko, a Twitter whistleblower who filed a complaint with federal authorities in July, alleging lax security measures and penetration of the company by foreign agents.)

Discussing the applicability of their research, the study's authors stated: "For example, a government campaign on Twitter supporting vaccination can engage with followers who are more likely to take certain action (eg spreading a campaign message) based on their opinions."

In order to synch the watch with a signal emitted via radio that gave a pilot a precise time reference, Weems developed a movable bezel controlled via a secondary crown.

This way, the user could monitor the margin of error between the watch's timekeeping and that of the radio signal, thereby minimizing possible navigational mistakes. This concept was later expanded upon by Charles Lindbergh with his Hour Angle watch.

Myriad iterations of these models have been created in the decades since their debut, to the extent that a simple eBay perusal yields watches with steel or plastic cases, 7-jewel or 17-jewel mechanical movements, and even quartz variants.

Thankfully, as of this writing, because of their relative abundance, you can pick up a MIL-W-46374 or GG-W-113 from companies like Benrus, Hamilton and Marathon for less than $200. If you'd prefer a modern homage, Military Watch Company makes a tribute to the GG-W-113.

Beginning in the 1950s, Tudor began supplying several of the world's navies with its Submariner dive watches. Although several different iterations of the Sub were used, the most famous is probably the 7016/0, the so-called “Snowflake” Submariner.

It is widely understood that the French Marine Nationale requested a special hand design that was more visible underwater, and the resulting hands and indices were put into production (they later trickled down into civilian production of the watch, which saw a second reference debut in the

form of the 9401). When a Snowflake Submariner with confirmable military provenance can be found, it commands an enormous premium over the civilian variant. Modern versions could be said to live on in Tudor's Black Bay line.

A simple, time-only watch with a black dial (though rarer white versions exist), white Arabic numerals and hands and 60-minute graduations, so many A-11s were produced that the watch is sometimes referred to as "the watch that won

the War.” The Mk II offers a modern, updated version called the Cruxible for $649. MIL-W-46374 was issued in October 1964 to provide a low cost, disposable alternative to the MIL-W-3818B. The spec provided for either metal or plastic cased watches with minimal shock or water protections, and a lower accuracy, non-hacking movement.

The cases were sealed, so any maintenance must be done by accessing the movement through the front. Remember, these were designed to be used until destroyed and replaced, but their hardy mechanical movements will respond to servicing.

The MIL-W-46374 entered service in September 1968 and production continued with various revisions through the late 1980's when quartz movements became the norm. These watches were made by Benrus, Belforte, Westclox, Hamilton, Timex, and Stocker and Yale.

All of these watches will bear case back markings with contract type, federal stock number, manufacturing part number, contract number, manufacture month and year, and serial number. US military watches from this era are not as common as they once were, but there are more than enough out there to warrant careful shopping.

There is no reason to settle for a damaged watch or an unsympathetic restoration. Better to hold out for a properly served survivor. In fact if you are, shall we say, of a certain age, you can use the manufacture date on the back to hunt down a watch that shares your birthday.

Whatever you choose, a good mil-spec hand winder like these will be a fine addition to your collection, with a rich history and decades of service still ahead. What follows is a selection of some of the world's most famous military watches and a brief history and explanation of each.

A cluttered dial, for example, makes the time difficult to read, and a special dive bezel that doesn't turn easily can make use underwater almost impossible.

Although developed in 1957, it wasn't until 1967 that the British MoD began using the Semaster 300M, which replaced for a time the Rolex Submariner as its primary dive watch. With a depth rating of 300 meters, twisted lugs, a caliber 552 self-winding movement, fixed spring bars and a bezel with hash marks for every minute, the 300M is an iconic military diver on par with the Milsub.

When one with genuine military markings comes up for sale that was used by a member of the elite Special Boat Squadron, the watch is almost guaranteed to fetch five figures. Omega makes a modern version.

Perhaps the most iconic of all pilot's watch designs, the Beobachtungs-Uhren ("observation watch") was developed in the late 1930s as an instrument for German bomber crews, who were then preparing for war. A specification was put forth by the Luftfahrtministerium (air ministry) and answered by five companies (IWC, A. Lange & Söhne, Wempe, Lacher & Company/Durowe (Laco), and Walter Storz (Stowa), which produced the watches under identical

specifications. Two types were specified, the A and B, which had slightly different dial layouts, but each featured a hand-winding movement in an oversized 55mm case that was meant to fit over a flight jacket (or, supposedly, to be strapped to

the pilot's or navigator's leg for hands-free use). Serviceability: It should be relatively simple for a watchmaker to service a military watch and to change or upgrade parts as necessary. Parts can (and do) break during use in adverse conditions, and if a watch features say, a movement that is difficult to work on, this will prevent the watch from being quickly put back into rotation.

Us Military Watch - This particular model is one of the cheapest models you’ll find that is worth owning as a military watch. All G-Shocks, so long as they aren’t knockoffs (very common, beware) are incredibly tough and have a very fair warranty.

It wouldn’t be a military watches page without some serious tacticool talk! For those few of you reading this that are true tactical operators, it may come as a surprise that there are watches with NV compatibility modes. This means the display has a lighting setting that shows up on your NV but does not illuminate the area around it, thus not giving away your position in the dead of night.

Not all watches are created equal and it should be no surprise that not all bands are created equal either. With most reputable watch companies, the band should have about the same standard of quality as the watch itself, but if you’re shopping in the cheapo territory, beware of garbage watch bands that come with your new timepiece.

They set out to make a purpose-built tactical watch and I think they’ve done just that. These watches are meant to be marketed towards military personnel and I’d say that including a heavy-duty extra-thick mineral glass face protected by a 44mm stainless steel case is probably the way to go. Yeah, it’s a little thick and a little bulky, but man do these things feel solid and durable and ready to roll into action right along with you.

However basic or technologically advanced the compass may be, it all comes down to simply having one that is reliable and having the knowledge to use it properly. Make sure you test your watch compass before taking it out in the field as some of them can be a little tricky and misleading if not used properly. Some may also require calibration or even firmware downloads to work properly!

Answering these questions are important and will ideally point you in the right direction. Failing to plan will likely end with you doing one of two horrible things. Either A, you’ll waste money buying a watch that implements tools you won’t ever use or B you’ll find yourself wishing you had spent more money due to your watch lacking functionality.

For starters, watch faces and their cases vary in size. Watches exceeding 45mm are generally considered to be “oversized” and watches smaller than 38mm are considered “refined” or “slim”. Medium classes of watch face cases reside in the 38mm – 42mm range and it’s inside of this range that most “military-grade” watches will be.

The Watches

Above all, I expect a watch that is marketed as “military-grade” to be exceptionally durable. Again, this is a bit subjective and it goes without saying that the more you spend, the better durability will likely be.

My Review: When I want something extremely well-built, simple, and utilitarian, I always check what the Germans have concocted. I was not disappointed in my search for a German military watch and it didn’t take long for me to come across the GPW Infantry lineup of field watches.

The most interesting part of this watch is the fact that it’s a one-button design making for a very simple and durable design. The fewer buttons, the fewer things to go wrong! I won’t go too in depth in terms of its diving features but overall, it’s a fantastic entry to intermediate dive watch that includes every feature for diving you can possibly think of.

Cool and handy if you actually have a use for it but if you don’t even own NV, you most certainly shouldn’t base your decision to buy a watch on if it has NV compatibility or not!

As an additional tidbit of information regarding waterproofing, remember that when you change the battery you have a high chance of altering the waterproofing of the watch. Ensure that you consult with the guide or a professional so that your watch continues to uphold its manufactured tolerance of H2O. Major damage to the crystal of your watch such as scratches and chips can significantly impact the durability of your watch underwater and reduce its ability to resist abnormal atmospheric pressure.

My Review: 5.11 Tactical makes some seriously awesome tactical gear and you’ll see us raving about their products all the time across many different categories. They didn’t start off making watches but it comes as no surprise they’ve gone out and given it a shot. I was skeptical at first as I’m a long Victorinox and Timex fan, but just like they do with their other products, they’ve impressed me once again.

But wait, there’s more! The Tactic Bravo (and Charlie reviewed above) is made for the most elite of operators and includes the Garmin Jumpmaster interface, projected way-points, dual-format GPS coordinate data tracking and a beautiful Sapphire Chroma display that is readable in the brightest of direct sunlight contact.

Creating a comprehensive list of military watches is no easy task mostly in part due to the wide selection of tactical watch configurations that may fit the criteria of a military watch. I’ve tried to list watches that I think stand alone in their category and outperform their direct competitors.

However, the apparent involvement of Denis 'Nikitin' Kapustin - the infamous neo-Nazi leader of a group of Russian soldiers fighting for Ukraine - was seen as an indication that Kyiv may actually at least have had some advance knowledge of the reported attacks.

This watch is fantastic for those of you who can’t fathom the idea of spending over a hundred bucks on a G-Shock. It’s fairly bare-bones but it is incredibly durable and will sustain abuse from most average outdoor activities with ease.

These watches are extremely simple for the class and ruggedness they exude. 5.11 Tactical designed these watches to be easy to work on and change the batteries yourself and I really appreciate the attention to detail you find in its minimalist but rugged design.

Complete with solar charging, it’ll last several weeks with no light sources. The watch is triple reinforced to resist impact and abuse and simply put, it’s expensive because it’s nearly unkillable. If you’re someone who prides themselves on utter destruction and pushing products to their limits, this may be a fun one to give a go at. This is a watch that should outlive most buyers.

This is one of the lowest cost Eco-Drive watches you’ll find that I would consider a “military watch”. It’s incredible the value and durability you get here at this price point and if you’re looking for something analog that is tried and true from one of the top watchmaking brands, this is the watch I would recommend. We will review more expensive Eco-Drive watches and of course, they are each different with their own characteristics but the Military Eco-Drive is one of the best values out of the Eco-Drives we will list here.

The Japanese movement used in this watch is long known to be rugged and durable and with a water resistance rating of 330’, you are sure to run this watch through its paces and still tell the time when the dust settles!

My Review: The Timex Expedition has been around for quite some time now and it’s certainly well-known as a budget classic in the military watches category. At under fifty bucks, this watch packs a whole lot of value that you just don’t typically expect like a premium 20mm real leather strap, water-resistance all the way down to 330’, and a rather beautiful but rugged-looking 43mm brass casing that encompasses an Indiglo watch dial.

My Review: Seiko does an excellent job on these rough and tough but classic diver-watch inspired timepieces and the Prospex is a whole new level of excellence. No, these aren’t padded in OD green or sit stealthily on your wrist in flat black but they do encompass a lot of the rugged and durable attributes we look for when choosing a timekeeper that we know will be face adversity.

With a 37mm stainless steel design and a Hardlex mineral dial window, the 21 jewel automatic movement display is well protected and looks gorgeous. At $85, this is one of the clearest displays in this price range.

This watch is sold at a lot of military exchanges and was the first watch I bought when I joined the Marines. It served me well and was around for many of my best and also most difficult memories! I put this watch through hell and even today it still operates like new.

I don’t think I’ve come across a Victorinox watch yet that isn’t readable in complete darkness and here again, I am not disappointed. The hands are illuminated and there are markers near every hour indicator that allows for excellent visibility in low-light situations.

In the durability department, at the bare minimum, I’d expect a watch to survive a fall twice the height of where my arms hand to. That’s not a professional durability test, however, if a watch fails this test, I personally don’t believe it deserves to be named a military grade timepiece!
